Stressed? Have you ever tried spending some time in a treehouse? I wasn’t one of the VERY lucky kids that had a treehouse growing up; but I did have a favorite tree in my backyard that I loved to climb with my imagination running as free as the breeze on a Spring day. On any given day I could be a gymnast using a tree limb as a horizonal bar to practice flipping or an Amazon warrior exploring the jungle. Being in a tree house usually gives us a view out over a space that’s green. Even if you are not tapping into your best Wonder Woman impersonation, looking at greenery helps with restocking our stores of mental energy after we run them down doing knowledge work all day. That may have a lot to do with why I couldn’t wait to throw down my book bag and get to climbing after a long day of school.
On a recent trip to Tulum, Mexico I discovered a tree house concept that is all grown up with a sexy makeover. In my search for a retreat from the more party centric vibe of the region, I stumbled upon an oasis at the Azulik Resort that came with a “tree-mendous” view! Rising from the jungle floor above the thick tree canopies, the eco-friendly adult retreat is tucked away at the beginning of Tulum’s main beach drag.
A sense of Zen instantly swept over me as I tiptoed up the dimly lit, candle lined staircase to the rustic, electricity free vibe at one of Tulum’s trendiest low key night spots. Built on stilts 39 feet above Tulum’s Maya jungle, we were excited to take advantage of Kin Toh’s walk-in opportunity to sip cocktails while watching the magical Mexican sunset over trees. Serving Mayan-Mexican dishes, the resort’s restaurant (Kin Toh) is famous for its surreal architectural design and nests that float above the jungle canopy. Arriving by about 5pm will increase your chances of getting a seat at one of the limited number of tables.
Whether you are a child discovering adventure in your backyard or an adult suspended among the trees on Tulum’s dramatic coastline; treehouses offer a majestical view out over the world.
