Palm Beach is best known as a hot destination for the world’s wealthiest snowbirds. Located 72 miles north of Miami, the “Gold Coast” has a very rich and diverse history. Legend has it, that when oil baron Henry Flagler built the first 2 resort hotels in Palm Beach in the mid-1890s, thousands of workers from the Caribbean, lived at and around the intersection of North County Road and Sunset Avenue. Shacks of various sizes served as homes, stores and schools to families of color that resided in the shantytown that was known as the Styx. By 1906 most of the residents of the Styx had relocated from Palm Beach to the all-Black Northwest neighborhood of West Palm Beach, which had been established since 1894.
Worlds away from the region’s modest beginnings, Palm Beach’s pinkest destination is situated on the eastern end of the Atlantic coast barrier island’s famous Worth Avenue. A historic fixture since it was established in 1947, I couldn’t wait to kick up my blush heels by the pool at The Colony Palm Beach’s CPB Restaurant. It didn’t take me long to see why this chic hotel’s classic Colonial and cheeky pink exteriors have gain so much notoriety for being the “go-to” resort of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
Featured on "The Pink List" on PinkGirlsRunTheWorld.com, CPB’s pinkalicious tones were perfectly aligned with the vintage glam ambiance that I was in search of for our “Pretty in Pink” Palm Beach brunch celebration (click here to read more about how “The Pink List” started). The shimmery Art Deco chandelier that greeted us in the lobby sparkled beautifully against the soft coral & seafoam accents. Wearing my vintage “cat eye” sunnies, I was channeling Dorothy Dandridge and Marilyn Monroe with each stride down the palm tree lined vintage hallway that leads to the restaurant. Stepping onto the terrace, I entered an oasis where the pool sparkled like a sapphire under the afternoon sun as the DJ spun our favorite dance tunes. We sipped on rose sangrias and cucumber caipirinhas, as we nibbled on sweet and savory bites that were carefully curated by award winning Chef, Tom Whitaker.
Tapping into my inner Elle Woods, I knew it was no coincidence that the hotel’s color palette leans heavily on fearless pink! As a PR boss that has spent years building my portfolio and reputation as an industry expert; I LOVE the way former New York fashion public relations and communications executive, Sarah Wetenhall has followed her passion in shaping the hotel’s guest experience. Steps away from the Atlantic ocean, I snagged the perfect pic next to the pink Colony beach buggy cart that brings guests to the beach with matching pink & white striped chairs, umbrella and pink cooler. Next to The Colony’s stellar service, the complimentary custom paddleboards for navigating the intracoastal waterway and beach cruiser bikes are my favorite perks.
Let’s just say that fun is serious business at The Colony and it definitely shows!
