Appalachia culture consists of arts and crafts, food, folklore and myths with multiple ethnic influences (including African, Native American and German). Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains, Bristol, Virginia, is a destination that effortlessly combines small-town charm with vibrant culture. While my cousin and I have visited several towns throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains that extend from Southern Pennsylvania to Georgia; this was our 1st time in Bristol. Our stay at The Bristol Hotel perfectly captured the essence of the region. From cozy accommodations in The Legacy Suite to impeccable service, our time at the 65-room boutique hotel not only provided the perfect vibe for an impromptu “girls night” slumber party but also enriched our knowledge of Appalachia culture.
Upon arrival, I was immediately struck by the hotel’s inviting ambiance. A blend of modern elegance and rustic charm, locally inspired décor that paid homage to Bristol’s rich history is highlighted throughout the 1925 architectural landmark. The staff's warm welcome and gracious smiles instantly set the tone for a memorable stay that felt like a home away from home for this Jersey girl with Southern roots. The check-in process was swift and hassle-free, which made it easy for me to unwind after exchanging fun stories about backpacking across Europe with the hotel manager.
One of the hotel highlights was the breathtaking view of the city from the Lumac Rooftop Bar. Designed to be a community space, Lumac is inspired by the owner’s grandmother, Lulu McCall. My grandmother is the inspiration behind Pink Girls Run The World, so the connection to Marcus McCall’s grandmother felt extra special to me as I sipped hand crafted cocktails under the stars. Overlooking the rolling hills and valleys of the Appalachian Mountains, the panorama is a constant reminder of the natural beauty that surrounds the Virgina-Tennessee border.
The fusion of tradition and innovation keeps the culinary heritage of Appalachia alive. Dining at Vivian’s Table is a gastronomic journey. Reimagining traditional dishes, Vivian’s Table was inspired by big family dinners and the idea of a community table. Vivian is the name of the owner’s mom. Many of the restaurant’s recipes are either family recipes passed down from the original “Viv” or recipes inspired by hers. From hearty Southern breakfast, like their fish and grits to inventive local twists on classic dishes prepared by Chef Jason van Marter for dinner, every meal was a delightful exploration of regional flavors. The use of locally sourced ingredients further enhanced the connection to Bristol's culture and community.
Outside the hotel walls, Bristol's vibrant arts and music scene beckoned. The hotel's concierge was a wealth of information, providing recommendations for local galleries, live music venues, and historic landmarks. Exploring Bristol's downtown area, the Birthplace of Country Music Museum (home of the annual Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion) and attending the Bristol Ballet 75th Anniversary performance enriched my understanding of the city's cultural tapestry.
What truly set this hotel experience apart was its commitment to community engagement. I love how the hotel actively supports local artisans, musicians, and businesses.
For those seeking a blend of relaxation and cultural exploration, The Bristol Hotel offers the perfect retreat in the heart of a charming town. It was great to be able to experience its beauty with family. My time there left me with so many delightful memories.
