The cult classic, National Lampoon’s Vacation, set the tone for what my childhood mind thought was the ultimate family road trip. While I’ll never outgrow all the laughing at the shenanigans that take place in the quintessential American vacation comedy, my thoughts on what it means to hit the open road looking for adventure have definitely evolved quite a bit. After spending many of my adult years dreaming of the classic, all-American road trip in a “silver bullet” shaped Airstream, Autocamp Cape Cod’s rugged and refined campground offered me a test run “stationary” experience. The fictional Griswalds’ cramped 1980’s station wagon would have felt out of place at this plush New England destination where great design meets the great outdoors.
Upon pulling up to the outdoor hotel comprised of luxury tents and decked out Airstream suites, I quickly discovered that the only thing better than waking up to the sunrise gleaming through your tent is doing so from a swanky, campsite bed with a chic en suite bathroom. For the unenlightened, “glamping” aka glamourous camping, is the luxurious cousin of traditional camping.
The perfect destination for a quick getaway, Autocamp’s charming caravans were nothing like the NJ Pine Barrens cabins that I bunked in as a girl scout. The only difference between the Vista, Premium and Classic Airstreams is their location. Classic Airstreams are more centrally located. Premium Airstreams offer a more private location. Vista Suites offer the most privacy in addition to the best views. Our Airstream was equipped with a kitchen, a queen-sized bed and a full sized pull out futon with bedding. A cleverly placed Henry Thoreau book on the nightstand, highlighting America’s favorite naturalist, poet and philosopher. I thought this was a unique touch since among his famous aphorisms is his advice to "live at home like a traveler".
After enjoying a live guitarist on the property, we slipped out onto our patio under the stars to sip on Miss Understood Ginger Spice spiked apple cider as we roasted s’mores over the open fire. Outdoor fire pits with a grill top are included at every suite. Bring your own groceries or stock up at the curated AutoCamp General Store (the perfect place to snag ready to grill BBQ and s’mores kits).
Before checking out and hitting the road, we took full advantage of the complimentary hour-long yoga class and sweeping views in the mid-century modern clubhouse (Yoga mats and props are provided). The clubhouse also boasts beautiful bathrooms, showers, and amenities for guests staying in Luxury Tents.
Whether you’re flying solo or traveling with the whole family, booking with this exclusive Airstream lodging partner of is full of glamping adventure.
