The struggle for identity and belonging is a shared experience for many in the African diaspora, especially for those of us disconnected from our ancestral roots due to the transatlantic slave trade and the enduring impacts of colonialism. The ongoing fight against the erasure of our history and culture can be both challenging and deeply emotional.
A Spiritual Journey in Lagos
As a Black woman in the diaspora, exploring the nuances and diversity of African cultures during my recent trip to Lagos, Nigeria, was a profoundly enriching and spiritual journey. I reflected on how many customs I experienced during my visit were not passed down through family traditions, having sadly died with my ancestors during the Middle Passage.
Embracing the Asoebi Tradition
Being chosen as an Asoebi guest at a Nigerian wedding was a true honor. Asoebi guests wear specific materials or prints to signify unity with the family. Nigeria is home to over 500 ethnic groups, each with its own traditional fabrics. The term “Asoebi,” derived from Yoruba, translates to “family cloth” or “family uniform.” Our dresses, crafted by a local seamstress, included yards of vibrant fabric along with an additional piece for the traditional head wrap known as the gele. This collaborative effort brought everyone closer together, bridging our diverse backgrounds.
Hidden Gems of Lagos
Leading up to the wedding ceremony, we explored some of Lagos's top culinary gems and attractions. A visit to Nike Gallery was a must; this cultural hub features an eclectic mix of art from talented artists worldwide. I also enjoyed dining at Ile Eros Restaurant, famous for its legendary jollof rice, and The Yellow Chilli, where the contemporary twist on local flavors made for an unforgettable experience. in Lagos.

As the wedding drew near, the sense of community and celebration enveloped us, showcasing the rich tapestry of Nigerian culture. Each shared meal and adventure deepened our bonds, making this journey not just about the wedding but about embracing the beautiful spirit of this busy epicenter.
